ABOUT THE CSH PROGRAMME
The City Solicitors Horizons (CS Horizons) programme, a social mobility initiative to improve access to the legal profession for undergraduates from disadvantaged backgrounds, was launched in during the 2015/2016 academic year. The initiative is run and delivered by SEO London on behalf of the City of London Solicitors’ Company, City Solicitors’ Educational Trust (CSET) and The Legal Education Foundation (TLEF), with the support of the City of London Law Society (CLLS) and leading law firms.
CS Horizons recruits 50 students each year to participate in a programme that will support them over a three year period, from their first year at university to graduation.
CS Horizons works with the students who join the programme in the following ways:
Work experience placements
We offer training which is designed to significantly improve the students’ skills and equip them for their chosen law career.
We also provide support for students who are preparing for vacation schemes and training contracts by providing assistance with applications, interviews and assessment centres.
Students will be provided with a mentor who is a lawyer at one of our leading sponsor firms.
The mentors will offer regular support though either face-to-face meetings or over email.
Mentors have helped students by giving general careers advice and advice related to making applications for vacation schemes and training contracts.
We provide excellent work experience placements at one of our sponsors firms. A week long placement is offered each year that the students are involved in the scheme.
During the work experience placements the students get involved in live matters and get valuable experience and training from the firms.
For many students, the work experience placement enables them to impress law firms which can assist in securing a training contract.
STUDENT TESTIMONIALS FROM THE 2015 PROGRAMME
“Being a part of the CS Horizons programme has made me confirm my aspirations of pursuing a career in law. I would recommend the programme to anyone, it has given me tips about applications that I would not have known otherwise and gave me a better understanding about becoming a commercial lawyer in the city overall.”
“Thank you for developing such an in depth scheme to help us with all aspects of applying to work in the City.”
“I have had the opportunity to attend workshops on presentation, commercial awareness and CV building workshops. I also managed to complete a week-long work experience at Pinsent Masons and have had a productive relationship with a personal mentor. I’m looking forward to commencing the second year of the programme and certainly feel in a much stronger position to pursue vacation schemes and training contracts.”
